Making a clean WBench 3.1 installation
« on: November 09, 2005, 03:14:07 PM »
Hello everybody

I`d like to emulate an Amiga 4000 on the latest version of WinUAE. I`d also like to have Workbench 3.1 installed on a virtual hard disk. Is there some tutorial or walkthrough for newbies so I can do this thing?

thx, in advance

- Install and setup WinUAE (choose ROM, video...)
- Create a Harddrive (use Virtual Directory)
- Insert Install 3.1 disk into DF0:
- Start Emulation
- Wait until Workbench comes up, double click on the Install 3.1 Disk Icon
- Double Click on the Install Script (may be a drawer you need to open first, can't remember)
- Follow on screen instructions and change disk when needed
- When install is finished, remove all disks, reboot
Slightly bored and severly confused..

ok. I installed Workbench 3.1. Now I load my Amiga and can see the HD0 icon when I start. But everything is grey. Does Workbench not support more colors?

The blue/grey motif is the default. Use the Screenmode preferences to add more colors to the Workbench screen, Palette to change colors, and WBPattern to set a backdrop image.

There are more third-party utilities to allow further customization, but those are the ones built in to the OS.

Some colleaugue of mine used this Amiga in a box software and the screen seemed really cool. Almost like a KDE desktop. Do I need to download this software and install it somehow in order to get that functionality?

Not sure, but this may help:

I used this to setup some cool stuff in WinUEA.
Good luck!

I have never used "Amiga In A Box" so I have no clue about that, but one thing you can do that will really improve the Workbench performance is to install Picasso96, for it to work you need to add some RTG Memory in the RAM settings of UAE. Picasso96 can be found here, and you will also need lha to unpack it which can be found here.

Picasso96 is a RTG system (ReTargetable Graphics) and is commonly used on real Amigas together with a graphics card, and allows you to run Workbench in higher resolution and use more colors. It will also greatly improve the speed of your emulated Amiga.

But if you're totally new to Amiga you might prefer to use something like Amiga In A Box which comes with lots of stuff preinstalled.

I used to own an old Amiga 500 with an upgraded 2.0 Kickstart but have never used a newer Amiga version. I`ll try these out and tell you my experiences.

I downloaded these files! Nonetheless, I don`t know how to use them. How can I see these files under the virtual hard disk of the emulated Amiga? Can I simply copy them to the real directory of the Windows XP folder hosting the Amiga Disk.
