Zorros/Gfx boards for A1200D?
« on: November 26, 2004, 10:40:13 PM »
Can I add a gfx board to an A1200 without hardware hacks or towering?

Is the Grafitti box a gfx board or scan-doubler?

How might I add some Zorro slots, if necessary?  I have some external HD boxes (scsi) - could a board be installed in one?

Thanks,

The only gfx card you can fit into an A1200D case without real hacking is the BVision.

However, using a BVision in an A1200D and the BlizzardPPC in conjunction is going to destroy your system eventually, either by overheating or current damage.

The Graffiti is an interesting looking device but not a replacement for a full graphics card. It allows software that is aware of it to use a chunky framebuffer in chip ram.

You could probably hack a Zorro2 bus from the A1200 trapdoor - it has most of the signals AFAIK.

Judging by the size of the busboards (zorro or otherwise) on The Big Book of Amiga Hardware you won't be able to make them fit into the desktop case.

I think you'd be better going for a mediator then you could use moder gfx cards.  Saying that if you do get a zorro board you'd be able to use a Picasso IV card (if you can find one) :-)

There's currently no internal gfx card option other than the BlizzardVisionPPC card, which in turn requires an ungodly expensive and rare BlizzardPPC accelerator card.  But because this setup draws so much power from the 1200 and generates so much heat, it's better suited for a towered up version anyway.  I'd recommend an internal scandoubler/flickerfixer that attaches to the AA chipset for the desktop a1200.  Though it's limited, you can then use the native AA interlaced modes for pretty good screen resolutions and graphics.  afaik such scandoublers/flickerfixers are still in manufacture in Europe.

Thanks everyone.  You've confirmed my suspicion that I don't really want a gfx board that badly.  I do have a sd/ff on another monitor.  Maybe I'll try it on my 1950.

I always find out what I need with this forum.
