DPS PAR board
« on: November 18, 2004, 07:29:19 PM »
Several months ago I posted an inquiry about the DPS PAR board.  I had read somewhere in the past that about any of todays IDE drives could be used with the PAR board.  I bought my PAR new back in 94 and bought the recommended drive for it at that time.  It was a 1.6 GB Micropolis 5.25" drive.  It barely fit in the 5.25" drive bay of the Amiga 2000 and even then I had to cut out the front of the case for it and make a special grille cover for it.  I still have that drive and it is still working with the PAR.  I would like to put a small but larger capacity IDE drive or even two on the PAR.  The PAR can only see 8 GB so it is hard to buy a new suitable IDE drive for it.  I have quite a collecrion of server pull drives in the 4 to 10 GB range.  None of them will work with the PAR though.  I have hooked them up to my PCs and even bought special software to wipe them clean but no matter what I do nothing seems to make the drives work with the PAR.  I would very much like to hear from somebody out there that has encountered this problem and beat it.

ergh.   Still fighting this battle eh?
I tried several used drives to no avail. I then started back to the beginning and went through the list of compatible drives recommended my DPS in the manual. So far I've gotten two 4 gig drives running. The rest are now paper weights. Try to stick with Seagate drives. Don't have any drive numbers at the moment 'cuz the computer loft is a mess. In the middle of moving.

Yep, I'm afraid so.  I did a temporary retreat and decided to put the beast back together because I need to use it.  It really doesn't make sense to me why I am having this problem.  I don't mean to take joy in your difficulties but It is comforting to know that somebody else has experienced problems with this.  Somewhere I have a list of drives that are supposed to work and it is a list expanded far beyond the original list in the manual.  If I find it are you interesed in seeing it?  I have this strange feeling that I am going to stumble onto that list and some drives as soon as I get this beast back together and in the rack in my studio.  It has been out far too long now and I have need for it.  BTW, I think that list came from DPS before they were absorbed into another company.

I would definitely be interested in the drive list as the only info I have on the PAR is the manual. Once I get my living arrangements sorted out, I can get back to tinkering with the systems.  :-D

I don't have the drive list here anymore (I had it on my machine that got formatted - was about 18 known-working drives on the list) but I do know that a Seagate ST3600A worked with this card perfectly. How do I know this? I have the drive sitting here and I know it came from a working PAR rig. :-)

You will find that quite a few other Seagate STxxxxA drives will work with this card. If memory serves correctly, the 13GB ST313021A worked (as an 8GB drive) with the PAR card.

These can be found on eBay (used) for around $10 to $15 quite often.

I sent you a message regarding that manual you wanted.  Check your Amiga.org mail.
