Thinner A1200 Trapdoor

Hello

I was querying about if it would be possible to get a thinner trapdoor for the A1200, as i am about to cram my B1260 in there. And no, i am not talking about Trapdoor as in the kids TVB show! :-)

Luckily, the 64meg simm i have is thin enough, so i don't have to but my beloved A1200 on a any stupid legs or anything. It can be flat on the floor. Still, i am after an even thinner simm, so it will be even better.

Maybe i should sand down the trapdoor a little.

I used a metalmesh from a speaker cover as trapdoor for my A1200 with B1260, it also had legs and a heatsing, but still sadly it suddently died on me. XC060 CPU's need cooling, there's no question about it, MC060 might be ok without. Alot of nice hardware is dying before it's time because of people not using commen sence.

When I first got my BPPC, I just built a dock out of plastic. Exactly the same area as the underside of the 1200 case and just tall enough to fit a standard CD Rom, which was under the left hand side of the case.

The dock had air intake fans at the back that ducted the air to the trapdoor, where the 040 with its big heatsink was. The only way for the air to escape was up through the trapdoor and front air intakes of the 1200 base and out through the top vents.

All in all it worked pretty good :-)

So it is recommened i should take the cover off. Has anyone on these boards actually have a cover with the B1260 or any other acclelerator (030) in operation?

Alas I long since towered the system and IIRC cannibalised the dock for something else :-/

I have the cover in place but my 060 is a Apollo, MC version no problems with that one.

I discovered an image called 'xmasdoomy' on my hard disk the other day. When I was posting in a thread entitled 'Hearty handshakes are in order', someone suggested that I find a sock avatar. I decided on that Doomy one. However, since then, the maximum avatar size has been reduced.
I very quickly cut it down using a crap prog that comes with Windoze 2000. So that's why part of Doomy's chin has been cut off.
It was outright plagiarism!

I also had the need to improve cooling of my A1200's underside when cramming in a PPC accelerator. I didn't want to leave the cover out altogether, so I cut some slits to help airflow. I also replaced the rubber feet on the corners of the A1200 with some higher ones, so air can move around more freely under the case. Here is no longer a picture. There is also a 60mm fan inside the case circulating air, plus the PPC's own little fan.

I'm still not very happy with the PPC's temperature, but it was rather hot while in a tower case too and seems to have suffered no ill effects. I don't think I'll leave the desktop on for long periods of time though.

I had my B1260 without the trapdoor first... without feets... the table hot hot and the CPU even hotter. Try add at least a small heatsink to it and run it without the trapdoor (or use a custom one that allow for air to come across the CPU).

I used to have a B1230/50 MK3 for a few years and I ran it with the trapdoor on. It got hot but seemed to be happy with that.

The Apollo1260 have the CPU on the other side of the card so there's no real beenefit of running it with or without trapdoor. Probably a bit more room for a heatsink also but where's the airflow?
