Is there a way to make Scala working with RTG
« on: November 11, 2004, 02:22:50 AM »
Hello,

As said in topic, I would like to use Scala MM300 with my CV64-3D and Picasso96. Is it possible ? Do I have to use some piece of software to force Scala to open its screen on P96 modes ?

Alternatively, if Scala doesn't do the job, what presentation/multimedia program is recommended ?

I think Scala's editor screen is system friendly - so you can edit presentations on a P96 screen, but playback must be NTSC or PAL.

Hollywood is a modern reimplementation of what Scala is all about. There's even a plugin to read Scala slideshows directly. Airsoft sells it. It's fully system friendly. I plan on getting a copy of the OS4 version once it's released.

I think Scala's one of those fussy programs that won't promote. Though I could never get ModePro working too well. ;-)

Scala DOES promote to DblNTSC/DblPAL through the Mode Promotion tickbox in IControl, however.

I think you can select a CGX mode from the prefs, however, it doesn't work properly, and I think it crashes.

There is a solution to all of this.. It requires you to buy some new software though for an RTG display..

Check out:

Airsoft Malibu

Hollywood, Hollywood Designer, and the Malibu Plug in..

From the Airsoft Website:

Malibu is a plugin for Hollywood which contains an import filter for Scala presentations. As soon as Malibu is installed, Hollywood will suddenly be able to show Scala presentations or compile them.

With Malibu it is now possible for the first time to display Scala presentations on Workbench screen or on your own public screen. Because the whole emulation runs on top of Hollywood's multimedia application layer everything will be first converted to 24-bit and then displayed. In many cases the quality of the pictures that Malibu displays is much better than the original Scala quality because Scala often had to remap many pictures with very different colors to a 8-bit display which resulted in a massive loss of color information.

Malibu emulates nearly the whole Scala command set and supports all Scala versions up to Scala InfoChannel 500 which was the last Amiga version of Scala. Emulation is done by the elCapitan microkernel which tries to achieve the best performance possible on the used system. For example, the next page is already calculated while the current page is on the display. Complex transition effects can also be pre-calculated and then displayed smoothly.

This sounds like the problem I have with LightWave3D. It will only output in native Amiga AGA modes or to a Picasso board. I recently replaced my PIV with a Mediator/Voodoo5 and immediately lost the use of LightWave.

Anyway, the answer may be to use a PCI tv card. These will take native PAL video in and direct it to a Voodoo card. Haven't succeeded yet, in fact I've just managed to get BBC1, etc, but it looks promising.

Cheers,

JaX
