Question on Shipping heavy Amiga?
« on: September 15, 2004, 05:00:16 PM »
I recently won a 3000T on ebay!  It is in Toronto Canada and I am in Seattle, WA.  I have a choice:  Surface or Air.  Air is double the shipping at $170.  I know it takes a while from Canada to USA so I think surface might be bad on the Amiga as in damage in transit.  What do you guys recommend?

Air, by all means. Surface gives you nothing but headaches. It takes so damn long and it increases risks of a lost or a damaged parcel.

I can pick it up for him and use it until he is able to come to Toronto and get it. ;-)

Depends how much money you'd earn in the time it takes to get there and back if you have to take time off for it... and the petrol. But road trips are always fun. Adventure!

Edit: When you get it, take some pictures for the gallery! Please? :-)

Depends on how the guy packs it. If he packs it real well, it shouldn't matter. Just how soon do you want it.

Congratulations on your buy!!
(It is my dreAmiga)

Having shipped lots of computer systems over the years I
have one tip for you;

AIR!

This way you stand a much better chance of receiveing a
working Amiga, especially if it has a few Zorro cards
or anything else that might come loose inside...

When I first received my 4000 (towered in a HUGE all steel case) it
was in many pieces. I guess the guys who handled it along the way were
angry about having to deal with such a heavy box.

When I sold it, my well trusted local PakMail guy told me to send it
UPS, because Fed Ex wouldn't deal with that big a box. Although VERY
carefully packled, it once again arrived at it's new owner's in
pieces.

I don't think it really matters whether it goes ground or air. You
still have people handling an oversize, heavy box at many points along
the way, and they aren't going to care what's in it. They're only
going to care that the hard work ruined their day.(based on info from
my son who used to work at a large UPS hub.)

Good luck!

You could try asking the guy to brake it down and ship it in multiple boxed instead of one big heavy oversized box. Yeah, there would be a large box for the case, but it would be lighter. Plus, with the drives and cards would be better protected if shipped uninstalled.

You could also try to convince the seller to cross the border over to Niagra or Buffalo to ship it. :-D

Well the 3000T has no cards or anything installed except for the HD and two floppy drives, but those are screwed in.  I guess I am better off Air as that is less "hangling" going on and the chances are lower for damage.

I had my A3000T shipped from Creative Computers in CA to Seattle about 10 years ago and it was $125.00 then for air.  It was double boxed and arrived fine.  In fact it's stored in the shipping box right now :-).
