Amiga 1200 disk drive dead?
« on: August 13, 2004, 10:50:35 PM »
I posted most of this as a reply to another topic about disk drives on the A1200, but I after I thought about it I didn't think that many people would be looking at it since it seemed out of place.
Anyways, my problem.

I have my A1200 setup with a 4 way adapter from power computing, off of that I run a cdrom and an LS120. The A1200 is in a custom (temporary plexiglass) case with a converted AT power supply.

I cannot get my floppy drive, the standard single density (SD) to work at all. I have an extended floppy cable without the PC twist thing in it, so I know it should work it has also worked before. I used a homemade extended power connector and a power connector off of the PSU.  When I put a disk in the drive makes no noise but it does show up on the screen as unreadable/unrecognizable.  The same thing also happens if I put one of the SD disks into the LS120, but LS120 disks that where previously formatted work.

Is the drive dead, and if so can it be fixed?
If not can a DD disk drive be purchased for less than $40.

Sorry for the long post, and the earlier misposting.
Thanks,
Stephen

Well to answer my own questions.

Yes the drive is dead, some testing shows that it does not power up. It has been sitting for quite a while along with being bounced around on numerous moves and at one point being neglected to a damp basement, luckily the A1200 is fine.

I am assuming that the LS120 cannot read Amiga floppy disks or single sided disk and that is that problem.

Solution is to buy a new disk drive.

I've noticed that 'new' Amiga DD drives are a bit overpriced. I'd suggest you try and source one from another Amiga.
What with the age of the machines, it wouldn't do any harm to pick up another cheap one for spares.
