Minor problem with HDF games...
« on: July 20, 2004, 05:32:46 PM »
Hi,

After much faffing around, I've finally got my PC-Amiga parallel connection working (if I use the 'normal' pc2amiga.exe, I get loads of packet errors, but if I use the debug version, it all works perfectly?!?).

Anywho, I've got hold of some HDF games, and I tried copying them across and using XFS to mount them, but couldn't figure out how to do it (is it me, or are the help guides for Amiga software written with the assumption that the end-user knows the Amiga inside-out?!).

So, I ended up using an app on my PC (adfview) to copy the contents of a HDF file into a folder.

After copying the whole folder to my Amiga, I discovered that some games don't have an icon.  You need to "View -> All files" then find the file that runs the game (this also means that double-clicking the icon brings up the 'Execute Command' box - most annoying).  Are icons contained in .info files?

If someone could explain how to create icons, or just explain how to use XFS, it'd be realy helpful.

(oh, another thing I noticed is that quite a few of the HDF games I've got require some fastRAM (0.5Mb upwards).  Is this a common requirement of HD installed games?)

And one last thing, if I download a few HDF files from tomtoms, do I need WHDload to use them, or are they already setup/modified?

any help would be greatly appreciated!

HDF and WHDload are totally different things.

HDF is an image (like an iso) of an installed program and can be used AFAIK only with winuae. HDF are common for Mac system.

WHDload is a program to permitting games not-made-to-be-installed to be installed. You need the WHDload package to run them (and consider registering as it is a great program). Usually the slaves required some fast ram to run.

.HDF files are UAE hardfile images.  They are probably designed to autoboot.  To find which program file to run look for an s/startup-sequence file and pop it up in MultiView or EditPad (or whatever text viewer/editor you choose).

Icons are contained in .info files and you can go to sys:tools/iconedit to create an icon for your file.  Note, however, that programs launched from Workbench are treated differently than programs launched from startup-sequence so you may have to make a project icon and copy the startup-sequence file to the root directory.  Make a PROJECT icon for it and when you leave IconEdit click the icon once and select Info from the File menu.  From here type "IconX" into default tool and save the file.

I hope that gets you started.
