A4000 video problem
« on: July 19, 2004, 04:50:33 PM »
Hi,

I have a pretty basic A4000 030EC/25 16mb with a powerflyer zorro 3 card connecting a 3.2 gig hard disk and 8x cd-rom drive.

I have it connected to a commodore video monitor using a rgb cable. The problem is that the red colour connection seems to be somehow faulty as I only get red colour very intermittently and it is stopped by the slightest movement or jolt. When i get red it will seem to start at the left hand side of the screen (in workbench) and stop when it hits an icon or window creating a jagged "red patch". VERY rarely red works over the whole screen but it soon disappears.
I have also plugged an A520 video modulator into the video port and connected the composite video into the monitor but it is no different.

I don't think the problem is the cable or monitor as when connected to my A1200 (using same cable) the red comes through fine all the time.
I am guessing it is a connection somewhere in the A4000. Would it be worth trying to solder in a new socket on the A4000 or is it too risky? Also i have wondered if it would be possible to make something that plugs into the video slot on the Z3 backplane just to give a video port (no scandoubling/flickerfixing).
I do have a multimeter i could use to check connections in the a4000 but i don't know if it is safe or what to do.
Any advice welcome.

Thanks
   Peter

You can use a flicker fixer directly in the backplane video slot and this may solve your problem.. if not you can replace the 4000.. I wouldnt advise manually de-soldering the chips as its very tough (unless you are a solder tech)

Where would be the best place to source a scandoubler/flickerfixer for my a4000 nowadays?
Are they easy to find second hand or am I looking at buying one new?
