« on: July 13, 2004, 03:40:48 PM »
My A3000D has been a mess with the Segate ST34520N 4.3 gig HD formatted with HDInstTools 6.9

Finally getting around to reformating under os 3.5.
however, HDToolBox sees the drive but "Can't read Drive Configuration"

Isn't it possible to put all the data in manually?

If so, use 6.9 to read the config, write it all down then use the older version, input all the data and continue :-)

There is always one thing to remember when choosing HD prep software. Whether you use SCSIconfig or HDInstTools or HDToolbox, once you've prepped the drive you have to stick to that app and not change tool. You shouldn't - and sometimes can't - pick another tool.

Only on really stupid systems...

There is no reason whatsoever that the situation "should" be as it is in the case of HToolBox vs HDInstTools.

One slight difference in implementation is all it takes.

@Vincent

Yea, you can put the details in by hand...
(er, like i had to do once with a pair of `incompatible` drives...
hopefully you've got a sticker/label on the HD ?

If you don't have the sticker on the hd go to google and put the name and size or model number in.  You should find a site that has all the details.

I'm pretty sure you could forget about parking and reselection.  Mind you, there's no point in reselection if it can't read the geometry anyways...

After the "Unable to read Drive Configuraton" is clicked "OK" the window shuts. No other input can be made except for "Load RDB".   There is a lable on the drive and all the jumpers, to my best knowledge, are correct.

I guess I can just reformat with HDInstTools 6.9 and keep the HD size under 4 gigs.

This has been an ongoing frustration for the past few years. I really hate to see my Amiga equipment sit and collect dust. I also refuse to put more money into an aged system as I have already spent way too much as it is.
