Where to buy DVDs? (UK/Europe) - Germany?
« on: March 29, 2004, 04:58:52 PM »
At the moment I'm looking for some Eisensteins (Alexander Nebsky in particular) and the Trois Couleurs trilogy. These titles (such as the Eisenstein films) seem to be a rip on Amazon, and in fact the Three Colours trilogy hasn't been released (as a set) on Region 2 yet AFAIK
Anyone got any pointers - I've bought stuff from proxis.be before, is it cheaper buying DVDs from Germany, Nederlands etc?
I'm mainly after French films and silent films at the moment....

edit: Well seems I was wrong - Trois Couleurs IS available as a set on Proxis.be is 46 Euro, anyone know anywhere cheaper?

I think you should go for Germany. Todays, things are very expensive in the UK as far as I know. In the Netherlands (Nederland, not Nederlands, the latter is the language we speak) it isn't cheap either.. especially not since the BTW (not 'By The Way', but 'Belasting Toegevoegde Waarde', wich means VAT) is todays at app. 19 percent for products of luxury.

Sorry, I meant to write 'Netherlands'! My mind must have been on something else..but cheers for the clarification anyway :-)
Next time I'll call it 'Holland' ;-)

Right, so I need to find internet stores in Germany - any ideas anyone?

edit: Not only can I not get the name of Mannetje's homeland correct, the film title in the original post is meant to be Alexander Nevsky, not 'Nebsky' (perhaps I had Cyrillic on my mind?)

Any particular reason for limiting your options to EU-coutries? eBay's always a good place for fishing Hong Kong-releases and other el cheapo-dvds. I can see there's Battleship Potemkin going for a measly $2.86 (buy it now-price) this very moment. Also, there's Murnau's Nosferatu going for $4 and Renoir's Grand Illusion for $2.99, for example.

Well, I thought EU because there would be no import charges, the discs will be Region 2, and just quicker and easier to buy from Europe...
I have a friend who has a lot of HK DVDs, and have thought about getting some. I dunno, I suppose part of me wants the nice European version as well...

Thanks to all that replied. I get Three Colours trilogy from Choices Direct in the end, thanks BouncingAyatollah.
I actually bought it from MVC on day of release, then decided to take it back and order from Choices Direct in the end as it was 6 quid cheaper. [Incidentally, it was 40 quid in HMV]

Just watching it now...
