AO comics
« on: October 01, 2004, 05:32:35 PM »
Is this meant to be a comic?
The first line is easy for an English speaker, I only had to look up herkennen in my Dutch dictionary.

Quote
Hoe kan je een Hollands schip herkennen op de oceaan?

Er vliegen geen meeuwen achter.

As far as I understand it:
How can you recognise/notice(herkennen?) a Dutch ship on the ocean?

There(er) flies(vliegen) no(geen) gulls(meeuwen) behind(achter)

The second line I needed a dictionary for.

So,

How can you recognise a Dutch ship on the ocean?
There are no gulls flying behind it.

What??
Is this dutch humour? I don't get it, do Dutch sailors eat seagulls or something?

 :-?
I like Amigas

Well, the jokes are really quite bad that have been featured there so far, way beyond groaner level. Anyhoo, with this particular one I think the 'joke' is that Dutch people are so 'economical' (? I can't really find a good translation for 'zuinig')

I think in English it would be 'stingy' or 'tight-fisted'.
