Other possibilities include HomePNA (phoneline networking), the unrelated-competing HomePlug (powerline networking), or 10baseT ethernet running on existing unused phoneline pairs (if there're any available).
I've become something of a HomePNA guru, so to keep it short, I'd say something like 2Wire HomePortal or Linksys HPRO200, plus a Netgear PE102 per-machine, or per-room if you add an ethernet hub.
What provider are you with? Some actually give you a *discount* on home networking equipment!
