I don't need C64 anymore :D
« on: March 24, 2013, 12:12:37 AM »
Thanks to Apollo running at 80 Mhz I can run Frodo at an alarming FPS speed with 1541 emulation. In fact I have a C64 emulator inside my Commodore Amiga :D!!! The only thing left is sound in the configuration of the emulator it says SID Card. What does that mean? Does it mean I need to buy a hardware SID for Amiga to get sound output?

Thanks.

Unfortunately I have sold my C64 long, long, long time ago only because space is a huge factor. I have here in this table:

1) 22" Monitor underneath it PS 2
2) Beside this keyboard I am typing with right now is my xBox 360, and to the left of the PC mouse is my Amiga 1200.
3) Right in front of my Amiga 1200 is a laser printer and the monitor Commodore 1084s
4) to the right of the Amiga 1200 is it's mouse and right beside that the end of the table and couple of inches away from that is my bed.

So you can see space is an issue here...and I already stored my Apple IIgs in the closet as I cannot use it now. So Commodore 64 with it's own power supply, cable, disk drive 1541-ii and it's own power supply....plus floppy disks is just not going to cut it for me.

I am ok with no sound.....I will play C64 games with no sound. You are right however...that sound emulation will consume much more 68k CPU power...That is why I am wondering in frodo if I can use SID hardware card to solve my problem.

I think you under-estimate the hardware in the c64 :)
Disabling sound surely does help a lot, but then you can be left with timing problems, making software either run inconsistently, or even incorrectly vs. having sound enabled.
C64 graphics are also more complex than it may appear. It's a lot harder to emulate than the hardware in a speccy or cpc. Hardware sprites, and character based modes + bitmap modes, plus a plethora of non-standard modes, etc. On top of this the memory management of the c64 is somewhat more (obfuscated) complex than other 8bit machines.

MagiC64 really is a very well programmed bit of software. Blazingly fast for what it achieves. Its about as good as its going to get on a 68k amiga for a balance of speed vs. accuracy.

Don't be dishing Frodo please. It does a decent job. For me in my Amiga 1200 it is runs in a good speed (albeit no sound) and I can play some good C64 games on it.

20 GB just will not cut it out for me anymore.

Im not "dishing" Frodo. It's a decent emulator. I even did an updated port some time ago.
The fact remains however that MagiC64 is, overall, the best c64 emulator for 68k. I dont say it as any sort of allegiance or other such nonsense, I say it because its true.

The storage space comment was a little left of field though :)
With some games taking 500meg to 1 gig (and more), even on a 68k amiga 20 gig is obviously not nearly enough unless all a person wants to do is play games using whdload.

Anyway, all this c64 talk has me wanting to play some c64 Cabal. Great game, much better than Amiga and arcade versions, and coincidently the 1st game I played on a c64 emulator on my amiga.

* evil smirk * I tend to do that people :D :D Concerning the reply of my storage space...it is more than just games.....even though right now I have at least 5 GB worth of HUGE games to play not including almost all WHDLoad games...but I enjoy listening to mp3 in my A1200 and I also want to put all my movies and tv shows (if not all, as much as possible) into my Amiga 1200. Sadly, the maximum space in a HD I can go is 300 GB so with that (even though not enough) I can still try to squeeze as much as media content in it as possible.
