AmiQuake 2 AGA and Apollo 1260 32 MB of RAM

I am curios this is boggling my mind for a while. I only have 32 MB of RAM in my Apollo 1260 is that enough to run AmiQuake 2 AGA? I mean three things where I have no intention to do:

• I will fight with all my force NOT to tower my A1200 at all cost! I mean at all cost!!!
• Unable to add additional 32 MB of RAM slot to my Apollo 1260 because I will be forced to tower my A1200 that means $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and on top of it look at #1
• Replace my accelerator card with weaker Blizzard card.

I looked at the ribbon idea, ribbon cable soldered to the apollo and then to a SIMM socket. Problem would be the length you could go with it.

It would need to run to the left and then back, wouldn't want it covering the fan of the apollo.

Was going to get it done but was told a 100 euro.... my soldering abilities I wouldn't attempt it myself, wouldnt want to damage the apollo.

The other option I was playing with his virtual memory, which I've managed to get working quite well. But breaks my WHDLoad with it running, haven't had a chance to test it with much, but avail command and sysinfo report the extra VM RAM running.

Tried a couple of demo's which also worked, where before I was getting not enough RAM messages. But haven't really tested it further.

If someone is willing to try the ribbon idea for a reasonable price I'd be keen. :-)

Can't put a flat SIMM on mine due to the CPU fan, even though it's a very flat fan, unless I'm missing a trick there?

What is the performance issue if you go virtual? How do I set up virtual memory? Can I run AmiQuake 2 with VM RAM at a good speed?

AmiQuake 2 is slow on even an overclocked 68060. Virtual Memory is out of the question performance wise. If you don't want a tower, how about a bigger wedge to give more room?

Loriano Pagni's case looks roomy and well designed. Maybe you could add a CD-ROM while you're at it?

I love your idea Matthey!! This is exactly the perfect solution, can I use my Amiga 1200 motherboard in it? It is a perfect upgrade to everything!! Can I put my Amiga 1200 power supply in it (it is like the PC power supply but configured for Amiga 1200)? Can I raise the motherboard from touching the metal case of it when I install the motherboard and is there a hole for the PCMCIA and the disk drive?

Can I install the DVD player plus the Amiga 1200 original disk drive?

I don't know that the X500 will fit a 1200 motherboard. The 1200 motherboard is a little bigger than some of the new motherboards and has other requirements (keyboard?). I'm surprised Loriano didn't plan for a 1200 from the beginning as I would expect this would be a good market opportunity for users like you who want room, a CD-ROM, and internal power supply for their 1200. The X500 does support a picoPSU up to 160W which is plenty for an accelerator with all the fixings. I imagine that some customization of the case (back plate?) and connector extenders would be necessary to make this a reality but then Loriano has been accommodating and communicative so far. You should try contacting him at least. Maybe you could report back what you find as I'm sure there are other 1200 owners that would be interested in doing the same modification.

Oh! What a shame It would have being the perfect solution for my A1200. It would clean up the mess in my room big time and allow me to do all sorts of upgrades, even including adding additional 32 Mb of SIM RAM for my Apollo pushing it to 64 MB of RAM without effecting my keyboard in any way. It would be like exactly towering my A1200 but not really towering it in a PC tower but in another A500 like keyboard case.
