Smoked puffed off the vending of the A1200...
« on: January 10, 2012, 04:49:57 AM »
I just bought a 20 GB 2.5" IDE HARDDRIVE and when I installed it into my amiga 1200 bad burning smell and smoke puffed out of the A1200 vending hole. I was scared like no tomorrow, as soon as I opened the case I noticed one line of the 2.5" IDE cable is pitch black and burned down. there is no other damage except a bad smell from the HD and the cable itself. Did this fry my Amiga 1200? I am not so sure if the HD is dead either.

Well, the good news to this...my A1200 still turns on and it works. What I do not know yet if the IDE port on the motherboard is alive or not.

1)So what I did is I re-ordered a 20 GB HD from the same source.
2)What I did also is I ordered another 2.5" IDE HD from AmigaKit as well.

What I do want from you guys...if possible....to send me a picture tutorial or some great detail guide online with step by step in installing the HD correctly in the Amiga because I do not want to repeat the same mistake anymore. My high confidence of being able to install IDE HD is now chattered and I feel like a junior all over again. If there is a complete guide step by step with great detailed picture in how to install a HD on the Amiga 1200 I WOULD REALLY love it because I will be following the steps one by one.

Also I discovered that when I installed the HD the wrong way and using the original A500 power supply the Amiga 1200 was not powered on at all and the power supply made a zzeeeeping sound when I turned the power supply off. This only happened when I used the ATX 300 Watt power supply.

So I will use again the A500 power supply again in case that symptom happen again..but I am hoping with all hopes that never happens because I am relying on you guys to provide me the best detailed step by step tutorial installing an IDE hard drive with pictures.

I want to get this damn computer online with a HD already...and this is taking me too long -_-.

Wait you mean this picture is wrong. Those four additional pins...they must be used. You mean I need an entire different set of cables than the one on the picture?

I am going to take the HD that I tortured yesterday to work and with my colleague there I will be able to test it at work to see if it too fried. If it did not fry at all...then it is just a matter of getting a 2.5" 44 PIN IDE cable. so the most important thing I got from the picture is the red line cable on the IDE have to be on PIN 1 of the HD and PIN 1 of the Amiga motherboard then. Is number 1 labeled on the Amiga mother of the IDE port on the Amiga's motherboard?

pan1k you are 100% correct. The Amiga 1200 is alive and so is the HD I just discovered it from work. Now I need to make sure by looking at the picture in this forum that I match the way it is installed with mine. I am going to use the original A500 power supply instead of the 300 atx power supply. Because if I made a mistake again, it will simply not turn the amiga on and everything is fine, verses the 300 watt atx power supply will just force it on and cause problems...BUT I DO NOT WANT TO REPEAT THE MISTAKE AGAIN!! I am going to keep looking at that picture in this forum to make sure it is correct. Please guys tell me the red ribbon on the IDE that should be on the pin 1 of the HD and the Amiga 1200 IDE port right? Also, also, is that picture in this forum enough to make sure I do this right ones and for good? Thanks in advance.
