How to use a CD-ROM drive with the A1200NG
« on: January 15, 2026, 07:52:50 PM »
Hello everyone,
I have been pulling my hair out trying to use a CD-ROM drive with my A1200NG. USB sticks work just fine, but I can't ge the CD-ROM drive to be detected and working. I would be grateful for any suggestions, hints etc.

Here's what I have done thus far:

- Installed the A1200NG in an Elbox Black Tower.
- I connected a IDE to USB adapter to one of the USB ports and connected a DVD/CD-ROM drive to ther IDE port. Power to the DVD/CD-ROM drive was supplied through a separate 12v power supply with Molex connector.  This setup worked fine on both a Mac and on a Linux PC, meaning the CD in the drive was mounted and I was able to browse the contents of the CD.
- I launched the default AmiBench app/image USB keyboard, mouse and USB sticks all worked just fine. There is no CD-ROM option in the settings. No separate USB stickoption either. It just works.
- I created a new app/image and did a fresh install of AmigaOS 3.2.3. In the settings for that image I ticked the 'Use USB' and 'Use CDROM' boxes.
- When I boot into AmigaOS 3.2.3 image, USB sticks work just fine. No CD, though.
- I edited the 'CD0' mount list settings and changed the device from 'scsi.device' to uaescsi.device'. Rebooted. Still not CD-ROM.
- I changed the device number from its default ('2') to '1', saved the change, rebooted. no change.
- I changed the device number to '0'. Rebooted. No change.
- I shut down the app/image, unchecked the 'Use CDROM' box, saved the change, edited the settings again, ticked the bo, saved the change, restarted the image/app. No change.

Is this supposed to work? I assume so since the documentation mentions the ability to connect a CD-ROM drive. The 'Use CDROM' checkbox in the settings also suggests as much.

Am I missing something? Has anyone been able to get this to work? If so, how?

I repeatedly e-mailed 'support@amigakit.com. No response.

Thank you all!

You can see the FindDevice tool in the bottom right of the screenshot. It shows Unit=0, device=uaescsi.device and version 1.0. I read somewhere that unit=0 is the default for uaescsi.device. Whether I have something connected to the A1200NG, FindDevice always shows the same information, so it's not really detecting anything.

Here's the check box to 'Include CDROM Drive' in the settings for my 'Custom System'. The presence of that check box suggests to me that it should be possible. I mean, why else would it be there?

That brings up a question, though... There is a 4-pin RGGL audio connector on the motherboard. There's a matching audio out connector in the back of my DVD/CD-ROM drive. If the connector on the motherboard is not intended to be used with a CD-ROM drive, what is that connector for? How would one use it?

Sorry, I don't get it. If I can't install a CD-ROM drive, how can I "passthrough CDDA from Audio CD to the Amiga Sound Output?" What am I missing? I have asked Amigakit Support for an example of how one could use the CDDA connector. No response.
