I have the exact opposite problem on my MBP.

The internal speakers work fine, but when i plug external speakers into the headphone jack I get no audio output whatsoever.

Happens whether I'm booted into Linux or OSX.

Thanks for the response. Further investigation suggests that it is a hardware issue. From what I have read, there is a micro switch inside the audio jack that gets stuck. Some have suggested that you can use a toothpick to prod it loose. I'm still under warranty so I'm going to just take it in for repairs.

That's good to hear you can get it fixed.  Mine is 5yrs old now so no chance of getting a free repair.

I use an external audio interface under OSX when I'm using Logic though so the problem isn't so much of an issue there, just when I'm using Linux I can't use headphones (50% of the time when docked and 100% when on the move).

I just plugged a pair of headphones into the jack and they work yet the speakers don't, even though they work plugged into other devices.

Bizzare!
