Which ClassicWB for me?
« on: May 29, 2015, 09:35:51 PM »
I just dusted off my Amiga 1200 and am resetting everything up.  It has an 040 accelerator and plenty of ram but stuck at stock 2MB Chip ram.  I will be using a PAL non-interlaced resolution.

Which ClassicWB should I load, FULL, ADV, or ADVSP?  I am thinking Full but just double checking here.

Lol!

I just don't know what I'm doing currently.  I am using Winuae to mount the ClassicWB system drive then copying it to a compact flash.  I got that working but absolutely will switch to something different.  Gotta search for some tutorials.

Looks easy enough, I will download the ADFs and use the VirtualFloppy program. Gotta watch my Rangers in game 7 first tonight!!!

*Edit- duh I can set it all up in WinUAE and just copy it over....

Does anybody other than me just set up their Amiga on their Amiga? You know, use floppy disks and CD's?

I would but I'm really green with how to work things since I do not have floppies outside of workbench.  I need to figure out how to get ADF's over so transporting a winuae build seems like the easiest way.

Dan - I never worked with ADF images before. I can copy them over no problem as I have a PCMCIA CF card I use. I had the BetterWB up and running and backed it up. I'm now in process of setting up ClassicWB Full as it gives me a nice head start with preloaded apps.

I did have fun creating a custom boot disk that loads the pcmcia drivers and popped my old favorite disk master on it so I can easily switch things around now.

I preferred the BetterWB and rolled back after I couldn't get igame / whdload working with any games on ClassicWB. But after installing WHDLoad in BetterWB I couldn't get anything working there either so back to the drawing boards and reading. This should be easier....

@mbob - Wait what? Did you put the kickstart images in the correct location (Devs:Kickstarts/)?

Sure did, and even reformatted my system to ensure the CF card transfer was set to 0x1FE00

It crashes to GURU.  I am playing around with it working in WinUAE so I may have a compatibility issue with my Falcon 040 accelerator.

Games play just fine from disk but no matter what I do WHDLoad crashes.  I run Memtest in workbench and it spits out error after error so there must be something up with the 040 board.

Do you have a correct 68040.library in your LIBS: ?

The Commodore 68040.library will work fine and was supplied on the Workbench Install Disk IIRC.

It is there and I tried using the falcon's custom install disk which may patch it as well.

I think this Memtest failure is pretty key to this.

Have you tried booting with no startup-sequence from a cold boot, and then running Memtest?

My bad, the memtest tool was for a 680000 or 020.  I can't seem to find a 040 test tool.

Scratch that, its the memory.  32MB stick and copying files to RAM: always crashes around 16MB.  I will need to research and see if I can find a dimm for this board.

Trying this FalconPatch now: http://se.aminet.net/util/sys/FalconPatch.readme

This gave some different errors with WHDLoad getting devs:kickstarter/kick errors.

It also did not fix the system crashing when ram reaches around 16GB (half).  So I guess I need to start hunting down some ram for it.

I just grabbed one of these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/161121922148

And am crossing my fingers this is the fix to all my problems. I also dug a post I made when I bought this 1200/040 in 2011 where I seemed to have traced this to the memory then. I did buy a SIMM back then but it wasn't good. This one is advertised for an 040 so wish me luck.
