you will need to get the 4 or 8MB RAM with A1000 adapter. The adapter is used to move the RAM board away from the floppy drive.

The sync strainer is mostly used with Video Toaster boards by providing a correct signal that is necessary for the Toaster to bootup when using with VGA type monitor. It can also be used a 23->15pin converter. He probably has a monitor that supports 15KHz displays.
