256x4 means: 256kilobits x 4 bit wide, so if you need 256kiloBytes then you need 2 chips.
1byte = 8bits.
2 x 256x4 = 256kBytes
4 x 256x4 = 512kBytes
8 x 256x4 = 1024kbytes or 1MB
