Here's the way I see it:
ATM AOS and MOS are largely compatible. Providing that you stick to something like the
OpenAmiga specs, porting between them should be easy.
But eventually the two systems
will diverge - for instance, the DE and the QBox are very different things. By that point, they'll need enough users and developers to survive on their own.
