I am not a fan of Mint. I prefer Ubuntu or Open SUSE.

I don't know if they have fixed it but the Linux native VICE runs into a buffer overflow issue with the SID emulation. So it's easier to install Wine and then run the windows version of VICE.
 
Might be fixed though....
 
Take a look at Open SUSE though. It's the free and Novell supported so you do get some Novell security features.

No I wouldn't say it's for tinkerers. Pure Debian is for tinkerers.

I bought Mandrake as a big box version back in 2002. Loved that thing lol.
