To me I prefer gameplay over graphics. If a game plays well then it's all good as far as I am concerned. Graphics obviously play an important role in it. But I have played text adventures and still enjoyed myself.
Look at Portal on the Amiga and C64. Not the prettiest game to look at but played brilliantly.
