Well, I can think of one reason. It is relatively easy to pluck OCS/ECS chips from old, broken boards and put them in GBA1000.
Not so easy for SMD chips of A1200/A4000.
Anyway it's a first step. Hopefully FPGA based replacement boards for A1200 and A4000 will follow
