I think it's safer to deal directly with people you know (or know-ish as forums go), sure. I wouldn't say that any selling specific site would be any more or less safe than ebay, though. One thing about ebay and paypal, is that at least there is some kind of attempt at safety on their part.

sell on ebay, where everybody goes and prices can get bid up. buy on other sites where nobody goes and prices don't get bid up. :-D
