They took off in China and Japan, but here in the USA, CD-i never caught on and that was the only real commercial attempt people heard about. (Not counting CD32 because, sadly, even less people heard about that.) I heard recently that VCD is big in the Philipines, too. Big bootleg problem where US movies come out on VCD in shops before theaters, but something to do with there being a deal where it's legal to sell them anyway.
