Problem updating firmware on TheA500 Mini [SOLVED]
« on: January 20, 2024, 12:51:05 PM »
I have a problem updating my TheA500 Mini.

I tried (three weeks ago) emailing RetroGames with the same question, but so far no response.

I am trying to install the updated firmware with the file

theA500-mini-upgrade-v1.2.1.a5u

downloaded from their web site at

https://retrogames.biz/support/thea500-mini/upgrade/

I have copied the file to an otherwise empty 16G USB stick, formatted as
FAT32. I have also checked the copied file on the stick with Windows'
certutil program, and the SHA256 checksum matches the one on the web site.

I then follow the instructions on the download page: I have
disconnected all USB devices except the game pad and inserted my stick.
Then I start the THEA500 Mini and go to Options, Advanced Optyions -
System information. But it only shows me the version of the existing
firmware, there are no buttons to select Update or Cancel, the only
thing I can do is to Close with the blue button.

The existing firmware is shown as

manhattan-1.1.1-strange/09fffc15/13-05-2022/20:13:48

Can somebody help me get the update installed?

Best regards,

Niels

Thanks, will have a look.

Only other thing is maybe a problem with the USB stick you are using?
Yeah, but as I wrote, I have checked the checksum of the copied file file sitting on the stick, so it doesn't seem likely. Still, worth a try, I'll dig up another stick and try it.

Best regards,

Niels

Okay, I watched that video (see above), and although he almost completely did exactly the same as me, I spotted one difference: He copied the update not to an empty stick, but to the same stick he had already been using in the device.

So I made a backup of my stick with all the ADFs, LhAs and AMiniMiga etc., and then copied the update file to its root. And voila, when I then inserted the stick into my TheA500 Mini and went to the system information screen, it saw the update and gave me an option to install it, which went without problems.

So either it needs to be the stick with all the other stuff on it, or it was just a matter of that stick being a newer and better one than the one I used at first.

Thanks for your help!

Best regards,

Niels
