Myself, I preferred the Roman army method of paying in salt (where we get the word "Salary" from). "Hey, look at this PPC card on eBay! All the way up to MCXVII drachmas of Salt!" Then you'd have salPal, sending Salt back and forth to people's vault storage underneath the stockade you were manning on the frontier of the Empire, and so forth.
