So now that I have WinUAE up and running...
« on: May 20, 2005, 09:48:40 PM »
Here's what I'd like to try out on the "Amiga" side:

Web-browsing.  AWeb will do if I can get it running...anyone got a quick and dirty tutorial for doing so thru WinUAE?

e-mail

.PDF reading - I know there's an "ami-PDF" reader.  What all do I need to get it working?  Sounds odd, I know, but I've got a huge collection of old Dungeons & Dragons books on PDF and as a role-player they're kinda important. :-)

Listening to .MP3s.

Watching video files - divx/mpeg4/avi etc.

I'd also like to use my PC's fonts on the Amiga side of the house, as well.

I'd like to be able to view .JPG and .BMP as well as .TGA and .PNG graphics and use them as WB and Window backgrounds if possible.

What all do I need, folks?

My current configuration uses p96 and I've got 128mb RAM allocated to the Amiga side.  I've got WB&KS 3.1

Thanks in advance!

Winuae will surf with some differnet configs i cant send you some if you like, what miggy are you emulating?

An AGA-based fast 040 box.  Although I reckon the AGA doesn't matter as I'm using p96 and have emulated a 32mb video card.

Hum,
i use amigaamp/eagleplayer for mp3
frogger/multiview/visage/ etc for general viewing (using datatypes from aminet),
though i run OS3.9, so things may be different on your set up.

best just to download a selection of programs from aminet and see how you like them...
(most work fine in an emulated setup.)

oh, and you’ve installed MUI?
BEGUI, a nice selection of datatypes, etc...

I have not installed MUI.  That's for-pay SW, right?  Or is it free these days?  I remember "once upon a time" trying to use an early, early version on a 14mhz A500 I had (via AdSpeed) and it sloooooooooowed things down.  But I reckon now that I've got (according to SysSpeed) a 15ghz 040  :-D MUI will move speedily enough. :-)

You could check out the MUI Homepage to start with.. I'm not sure if they still accept registrations.. But I guess it's just a matter of downloading and installing.. nothing special needed.. afaik

Yeah, I got it from aminet but can't install it.  Well, rather I can install it but I get an error when I try to run it - "Failed to open multilocale.library (20)." so I don't know what's going on.

Have you checked that you go the assigns pointing in the right direction?

For example I’ve got this in my user startup

 ;BEGIN MUI
if exists "Workbench3.1:MUI"
   assign MUI: "Workbench3.1:MUI"
   if exists MUI:Libs
      assign add LIBS: MUI:Libs
   endif
   if exists MUI:Locale
      assign add LOCALE: MUI:Locale
   endif
   version >nil: exec.library 39
   if not warn
      if exists MUI:Docs
if exists HELP:dummy ; do not remove
         endif                ; this entry!
         assign add HELP: MUI:Docs
      endif
   endif
endif
;END MUI

You may need to change the `Workbench3.1` bit to whatever name and path is right for your system

Wow.  No idea what's going on here.

I was hoping it would be click-and-go!

Let me see if I can figure out what's going on...

Yeah, it should be just point and click.

Try a reinstall. (The MUI install script could have become corrupt)

Heh, yeah, understand it's been years since I've done anything beyond noodle with WinUAE for five minutes before moving on.  Oh I had a pretty tricked out A1200 "back in the day" (which I sold an awesome A500 to get the funds for)...

Okay, here's what's happening thus far:

I download MUI38USR.LHA from Aminet.

I open it with WinRAR and extract.  WinRAR returns this error:

C:\Documents and Settings\bill\Desktop\mui38usr.lha: Cannot create MUI\

...but it plows ahead and unpacks everything else.

When I run the install on the amiga-side I get this error:

Sorry...an error has occured!

COPYLIB: Can't open file " " in line 299

DOS Error Type: Unable to locate a file or drawer

and the only button is the "proceed" button.  If I click it the window closes.

So what's going on?  BTW, this has been happening from the start so I reckon it's why MUI {bleep}es when I start the emulation...

Don't use WinRAR to unpack LHA files.  You will have to use some LHA unpacker while on WinUAE to preserve special filename characters and special file attributes.

Just crossed that hurdle. :-) Aweb is now installed on my system (and it's working)!!!

So, next question: how do I get Aweb to show images?

Edit: Duh, found the plugins...but I can't get the JFIF/JPEG plugin installed.  The installer asks me for disk "Aweb3", if I click "cancel" it asks me to select where I want temporary .JPG storage.  No matter where I select it hangs at 90% installed... :-? Clues, anyone?

Hum,
Try another version?

you know about datatypes?

install a few from here (they go into classes:datatypes and devs:datatypes, as pairs usually, one in each ) they come with installers or readme file.

i seem to recall that Aweb used an internal jpeg decoder.
(or was it Ibrowse that used it???)

Heres a link to the ibrowse web browser
link:

Thanks; I tried a manual install and fixed it with that.

...but I'm still bum-fuzzled about viewing .JPG files externally.  I'll try sticking the datatypes in the appropriate place.

I also got APDF working, but that brings me to another question: how do I get the fonts from my PC working with the Amiga side?  Copying them into the fonts: drawer seems to have no effect (that is, the Amiga side can't see them).

Once those two things are overcome the only real hurdles left are:

MS-Word compatible document editor
Media playback (video, MP3/WAV files)
...aaannnd I think that'll do it.

Well I'm happy to say that I've got the PC fonts installed!  But I can't get a JPEG datatype installed and working.  The datatypes I've put in manually don't work, and the installer for "akJFIF-dt" blows up when I try to use it.  It reports an error, if I click ignore it hangs.  Otherwise it (of course) quits.

And I'm not using winRAR to unpack it; it's all being done "natively" on the Amiga side.

C'mon, there has to be a way to get this working.  I used to view .JPG files back in the day on my amiga...!

The stock OS3.5/3.9 jpeg datatype seems to work fine on my UAE installation.

So I'd just put those in the devs:datatypes and system:datatypes and I should be set?
