As Stedy already pointed out, the PCMCIA on the A1200 has a reset problem.
Neither turn on the machine with a PCMCIA-card plugged nor reset or turn it off.
Turn on the machine and after loading insert the card for use, pull the card before turning off the machine or reset.
Theres are some easy hardware fixes for the Gayle-Chip which can fix this problem.
