AmigaOS 4.1 Update 5 CD for the AmigaONE X1000 "First Contact" system has gone GOLD!

• Does this update enable the 2nd CPU core to be used?
• Does this update enable the use of more than 2GB of the system memory?
• Does this update enable built-in audio?
• Does this update enable built-in SATA?
• Does this update enable built-in USB?
• Is there 3D support for the graphics cards included?
• Does this update enable/utilize the much praised XMOS chip?

I for one would be quite interested to hear what exactly can be expected from the system while waiting for the mysterious 4.2 release.

We know answer is NO to all. All or most of these are for OS 4.2

In the past didn't it refer to a program being put on a "master" CD with gold colored substrate, ready for mass duplication?

Anyway it's a misuse of the term.

Not that this has ever stopped them.

Asked myself the same when Amiga Classic gone gold news appeared,
but yes, today "going gold" is actually being ready for end customers.

Don`t mix it with "Platinum editions" "Extended editions" etc. of games or music

Well, I simply spotted that one of the stake-holders of th X1000 was marketing his product by calling it "Amiga", which they specifically don't have a license to do. And the thing is, there are other entities who paid good money *to have* that right, and who also have the right to *take legal actions* against such infringements. They can call it "AmigaOne" or "Amiga One" in their marketing, but they can't market it as "Amiga". Potentially, mistakes/violitions like that could jeopardize the whole Amiga Inc <-> Hyperion settlement, depending on the mood of the other relevant IP holders...

Reality thing: THis is new Amiga (I can say AMIGA, yes?) and CUSA/iCoin just ain`t and will never be because of the software / hardware / development choices - those other "Amigas" (should be typed Amigas) are repacked rebadged not new products in any aspect.

Legal thing: Those fake things are to be called Amigas and real Amigas AmigaOnes (or PPC Macs)? :-)  Who doesn`t get it, deserves to pay for false Amiga and thing he is getting the right one :hammer:

People can say whatever they like, but bottom line the machine depicted in the image below is the new Amiga, no "quotation" marks necessary:

As computer that run AmigaOS, that new Amiga is the one that should be called "Amiga". But as we all know, that is a sad result of long run of bad decisions and name selling that makes almost anything to bear Amiga name of consumer electronics

Another question this PR raises is:
? Will OS4.1.5 be released as a bugfix update for existing OS4.1.4 users as well, and will it finally be an ISO (or maybe they will get the CD as well)? Or if no bugfix release will follow OS4.1.4 for existing OS4 users, will OS4.2.0 be a free upgrade for them as well, or was 4.1.4 how far the existing users will come without having to buy the OS once again at the release of OS4.2.0?

seems from this announcement OS 4.1.5 will be free bugfix release for all that just starts the X1000 basic support (like 4.1 did with SAM440, 4.1.1/4.1.2 with SAM 460 and Peg2 etc.) and after that will be no more frequent updates (unless some nasty bugs discovered in 4.1.5)

4.2.0 will be a payable release, but again would span a new wave of updates.

Just as it was with 4.0 (several developer releases and updates), was with 4.1 (5 updates), and will continue with 4.2

Luckily, 4.1 expanded support for few new boards (SAM 440/460, Peg2, X1000, better support for Classics) and hope 4.2 will do similar (I would hope on PPC Macs even its less likely)

but nobody associated to Hyperion/A-eon can do this, especially not in a marketing context (which Press Releases definitely are) since they are corporate entities making commercial business based on a license agreement that carefully outlines what they can and can't do regarding the said trade mark. And like it or not, they can't call it "Amiga". Others could (having paid good money for that right), but *they* can't. Money is involved, and multiple parties that doesn't really like each other very much, and like it or not - *there are* legitimate reasons to cancel agreements such as the one between the Amiga IP owner and Hyperion Entertainment.

Agreed, they should try addiing ONE after it and slaping themselves in face after it to learn it better (conditioning :-)

That`s great, a new update in just few weeks, an upcomming totally new OS version, plus support for a brand new MoBo.
I`m looking forward to buy the new OS (4.2), and if MOS could run on my MoBo I would even buy it just to try it and support the community.
2012 will be a great AMiGA year.

True, but for the same money you could get better Linux driven desktop, laptop or nettop and do the same. And it works. Or with Windows and maybe even Office standard for same price.

Yes, AmigaOS needs to catch up, SAM 460 and X1000 offer more horsepower and OS 4.2 is nice start for OS to modernize. Some of the things like having Java and Flash closed source has nothing to do with AmigaOS. AmigaOS never had those. HTML5 browsers like OWB and Timberwolf are milestone in Amiga browsing.

So if you compare it to browser in Android or any phone where flash and java work it looks sad. But those phones progressed to cost couple hundred euros and have quite powerful hardware just to do it on small screen. Amiga is progressing, now faster then before after long long sleep.

4.0 was fight to have it PPC
4.1 to polish and bugfix
4.2 to have Timberwolf, RadeonHD support, X1000 and nettop ...

Similarly
MOS 1.x to have PPC OS on Blizzard cards
MOS 2.x to modernize PPC OS on G3/G4
MOS 3.x to go to laptops and grow and improve

Yes, and to my belief so did MOS 1.x and MOS 2.x
MOS 3.x is decided to be free giveaway to existing users, which is nice.

Maybe Hyperion shoud learn from that. New users would anyway get OS 4.2 / MOS 3
