SP1 does that on vertain OEM codes too.

I had downloaded the full SP1 update when I was on dial-up so I didn't need to net-install it everytime I had to re-install WinXP.  I went round to a mate's house on Weds night and ran the updater.  After a few minutes it came up with the exclamation box with a load of useless stuff written in it along with the "this service pack will not be installed due to you using an illegal copy of Windows XP" or something like that.

The strange thing is, I've installed that update on quite a few illegal XP copies with no bother at all.

There's always a way round it anyway.  If not, the hackers will soon see that there is.
