VIA Raid dir opening on startup
« on: March 02, 2005, 01:15:03 AM »
Minor niggle that will become annoying.

After rebooting the PC when I log on I get the drawer C:\Program Files\VIA opening automatically.

There's nothing in msconfig or any of the startup drawers that I can see.  Removing the raid_tool (which is in C:\Program Files\VIA\RAID) from the startup doesn't make any difference.

Any ideas?

Thanks for that.

I checked all parts of the Start Menu (including the default and all users) and there was nothing there.

Just checked those points in the registry and there's no mention of the RAID dir except for loading the raid_tool.

Anymore ideas?

Switch off the SATA booting/search option.
(you are using IDE).

Done.  No change except for XP "found new hardware" after the disabling of SATA and installed drivers for the CD and DVD drives (which were already there as soon as it booted into XP anyway) then rebooting.  The dir still opens up.

And are you sure you loaded all the raid/via 4 in 1 drivers on the cd rom (they`re always hidded away  to bug you)

Yup, the 4in1 drivers installation thing is actually the first thing on the menu.  Everything that's on the CD is actually on the menu with the exception of the 4in1 4.49 drivers - it's the 4.51 that's on the menu.  I think.  That's the only thing that's missing anyway, but it has installed one of the versions.

Also worth a look at the control panel --> system -->hardware tab
and check that there arn`t any exclamation marks against any hardware devices...

Nope, nothing cautioned or not working.

None of that has worked.  The shift button has no effect either - the window still pops up, but other things like GetRight don't appear.

I'll check safe mode later if I remember.

I did install the SuperUtilities, but I haven't even looked at them yet.

Checking out that Starter prog (blobrana's suggestion - I'll check the other in a mo) I seem to have 4 "Disk Manager" appearances.

I don't remember seeing them before.  That might have been installed after turning off the SATA in the BIOS and XP installing drivers for the CD and DVD drives though.

They're actual location is C:\WINDOWS\System32\diskver.exe

@Trev

I don't know what half the stuff is when I'm showing everything in the Autoruns prog.

I can't see anything other than the raid_tool.exe pointing to the suspect dir tho.

Although there is one file not found:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved
Display Panning CPL Extension - File not found: deskpan.dll

I can't tell where the physical location is meant to be, but I don't think that's anything to do with the problem.

Deleting raid_tool from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run doesn't make a difference.  The key re-appears on reboot.  I had to delete it and reboot twice before I realised.

Booting into safe mode doesn't open the dir.

--edit--

Removing the raid_tool from msconfig makes no difference except for not starting the raid_tool.  The dir still opens.

You might want to have a seat before you read on...

I have actually solved the problem... with help from a PC forum :-o

:-P

I posted the problem, they asked for a HijackThis log, posted it back and they told me to fix:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DisplayTrayIcon] C:\WINDOWS\System32\TrayIcon.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C-Media Mixer] C:\Program Files\PCI Audio Applications\Bin\AudioRack.exe /MixerStartup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AudioDeck] C:\Program Files\VIA Technologies, Inc\Audio Deck\ADeck.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
O4 - Global Startup: GetRight - Tray Icon.lnk = C:\Program Files\GetRight\getright.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: VIA RAID TOOL.lnk = C:\Program Files\VIA\RAID\raid_tool.exe

Which I did (except for GetRight).  Rebooted and no dir opened :-D

--edit--

Removing the raid_tool.exe on it's own didn't have an effect, so it must've been something else, or partly something else...

--edit2--

Not that I didn't have any faith in you guys, far from it, but I didn't seem to be getting anywhere at the start (yesterday morning) so I posted on another forum to see if they were stumped.  I really hoped that they would be :-D

Yeah, HijackThis is excellent, used it once before.

But I never thought of using it in this type of situation - only used it to remove trojan-like stuff before, not normal startup stuff :-)

I wasn't sure what all the nwiz stuff was, and I think Nv is Nero VisionExpress, but then I could be totally wrong as usual :-D

Ah yes, I forgot about nVidia - got a GeForce FX5200.  The rest of the stuff I knew about.

As was said, this was probably your problem. The shortcut might have been broken. Anyhow, this would have been in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\. You must have missed it earlier. . . .

Nope, it definitely wasn't there.  It wasn't in the Default or the 2 user accounts either.  That's one of the first places checked.  The only place calling raid_tool.exe was the registry.  Saying that it is being called from a .lnk file.  Or a .lnk file that should have been.

After running HijackThis (before fixing) I did a search for via raid tool.lnk and it turned up nothing.  God knows where the file ended up.

adz is right.  I never even thought about the nVidia tray icon since installing the drivers.

It's not in the tray now, and it was definitely there before fixing the stuff above, so the entry is more than likely that.

I never had any cache boost type things at all.
