Opera & Smilies
« on: February 27, 2003, 02:27:20 PM »
I've just switched browser from Netscape 7 to Opera 7.02 Bork Edition and the javascript doesn't seem to like the smilies.  When I open the more window, all I get is...

l>

Javascript is enabled, it doesn't matter if Opera is set to be identified as IE6, Mozilla or Opera.

This maybe because you are doing stuff behind the scenes, but I thought you guys might like to now.

Thinking about it, you might have image download turned off (press G and see if that works)

Tried it and it doesn't work.  But if the image download was off I should still get the list of Smilies, but there's nothing there except:

There's nothing else in the window at all.

Glad to see it's not just me.

If I can't get it to work, I'mm gonna have to write down all the text versions of the smilies and keep it handy. :-(

Why you did that?
Netscape 7 is way the best browser right now (excluding Mozilla > 1.01 versions), supporting the majority of todays standards perfectly.

I've changed to Opera v7.02 simply becaus it's a hell of a lot faster than Netscape.  I generally don't need a browser with all the latest flash/shockwave/general plugins because I don't look at sites that need them.

Opera 7 has a nice skin though and handles most non-dynamic stuff ok, but I would put it behind IE 6...

IE6.  I would rate that behind Netscape.  I only use IE if I need to save the pictures of a web page along with the page itself, other than that it's of no use to me.

1. It is not faster then Opera 7.x.

No, Netscape is not faster, the way I've found it, Opera is notable faster than Netscape 7.

2. As you can see, smilies work! (using for this message)

Yes, the smilies work in Netscape, I just can't get them to work in Opera.

I've never used Zoom before.  Let's see.  I don't like it at all, so no worries there.

Cheers for that levelLORD :-)

I actually installed Netscape with Java before getting Opera, but I'll try wht you've suggested and see if it works.

Here's hoping :-)

Right.  Just tried a few things.

@Trooper

I can't find an earlier version of Opera to download, so I can't try 6.05 :-(

@ShadesOfGrey

The link and suggestion you supplied didn't work either :-(

@levelLORD

I installed Java with Netscape 7.0, then again with Opera.  I removed Java and Opera, and reinstalled them.  They still don't work. :-(

Preferences ---> multimedia, everything's fine there, all on what you've said.  That was the first thing I checked before posting here.

Don't worry, I won't be using IE6! ;-)  I'll use Netscape as a backup, failing that, I'll install K-Meleon aswell :-)

Hi LordSteven

Under the box where you type your message there's a few smilies.  Click on the more... bit and you should get a small window open containing more smilies.

This still doesn't work here.

All this hassle over smilies?

Well, I do use smilies regularly, so I notice them, if you don't use them, you'll never notice.

I'm just annoyed that I can't get them to work.
