Should I sell my A1200 and get a PS2?
« on: March 21, 2003, 03:48:34 PM »
Hello,

I've been using my A1200 less and less these days and keep thinking I might sell it and get a PS2 instead.  I just got this A1200 for Christmas...  I've found several games on the net to use with it, but I usually have to reboot to set PAL video or disable caches, which is really annoying.  People praise XTreme Racing and other car games I've tried, but I've just not found any games that I'm particularly fond of yet.  I get tons of hours of "Retro Gaming" out of my Commodore SX-64 all the time still, but I just havent been as impressed as I thought I would be with my Amiga.  Hardware is expensive, and software just to get on the internet is crippleware.

Can anyone convince me to keep this thing, or am I gonna be better off with a PS2?

Thanks,

Neofree

I'll never get an XBox.  I don't care what the specs are and what titles are for it.  I just don't like supporting Microsoft.

I have a long time fondness of Nintendo and some of their classic games/series, but I've read more then once that the PS2 actually had better graphics then the GameCube.  Plus the GameCube doesn't use standards like the PS2 does. (CD/DVD)  And there are more PS2 games, and my wife doesnt want to get a GameCube.  Basically if I get anything it's a PS2, or keep my Amiga.

I guess it wouldnt be so bad if I wasnt spending so much time just getting games to work on my A1200.  The main purpose I got it is so I can play games with my son, but he's lost interest in it because I spend more time trying to make games work then actually playing them.  And when they do work they're like, "All this for that".  Keep in mind I've not had a deep rooted history in Amiga as many others have had, but have had Amiga's over the years.  I want to find a reason to keep this, don't get me wrong, but I'm just having a hard time with it.

When you say PS2 (chipped), I know what you mean but do you recommend any particular chip?  I looked at that a bit yesterday and I am wondering which is OK to use.  It appears that if you use the "swap" method with the GameShark 2 or AR2 you could damage your PS2 if you're not careful.  This is just not something I could do in my home.  I would either need a simple bootdisk or something that is totally transparent.

Been awhile since I looked, but I am pretty sure that PS2 has emulators for Amiga and Commodore 64.  So I'd still be doing Amiga gaming.

I do use my Amiga 1200 to get on the internet sometimes, but I would call the experience overrated.  I also can get on the Internet with my SX-64, and altough options are more limited, the mear fact that I'm connected at all is amazing.  Now with a new operating system (Contiki) for the unexpanded Commodore 64 that gives a multitasking GUI and soon PPP support, I can just use that for my secondary internet use.

Forgot to mention my setup so here it is:

Amiga 1200 in original case
GVP A1230-II 40mhz 030 board with 8 meg GVP RAM and External SCSI option
External SCSI cd-rom (1 or 2x)
KS3.1 with OS3.1, 3.5 and 3.9
Commodore VGA adaptor, but I dont use it because I use this for games mostly, using with 1084 monitor
That's pretty much it.  I have a few original games and a Vidi 12 digitizer.

I'm still leaning towards the PS2 . . .

-D-: No joke, plus it's not the only one.  Check out these links:

Everyone Else:

Never had any question which console if I got one, PS2 for sure.  I'm still thinking of getting a PS2 now because I think my expanded A1200 is worth enough for a PS2 now.  Later I'll either get a better A1200 when they're cheaper, or get an A1 with OS4 if it ever exists.

I am using WHDLoad.  I have about 30 games installed on my HD, most are WHDLoad configured.  And most of the ones I enjoy most require rebooting for PAL or still require disabling cache.  The other issue that I'm bored of the games I have.  I've not yet found one that I really look forward to play again.

Oh yeah forgot to mention to everyone that I stil lhave an Amiga 500 and an Amiga 2000. Was thinking about upgrading maybe the 500 with a HD so I can play most of the same games anyway.

Anyone know if I can run the latest IBrowse or OS3.9 on the 500?

Well, I decided to sell my Amiga 1200...

Basically I use Amiga and Commodore units for nostalgia/retro computing reasons.  I've come to the conclusion that the Amiga 500 is actually a better nostalgia piece then the Amiga 1200.  The reason being is that the Amiga 500, when it was new, was ahead of it's time.  It was an amazing piece of hardware in it's time.  However, when the Amiga 1200 came out, it was already kind of just "average" or maybe even a little behind.  In otherwords, I expected more out of the Amiga 1200, because I wanted it to live up to the Amiga name.

In any case, I still have a fondness for Amiga, as well as Commodore 64 computers and still have an A500 and an A2000.  But this A1200 is going away for a PS2...

Here is the link for the A1200 on eBay:

Thanks,
