I recently purchased Gal chip replacements for the PAL U202 U203 U701 and U714 chips from an ebay seller. The item was listed as ;
Amiga 3000 GAL replacements for PAL U202 U203 U701 U714
At the time he had quantity of 4. The listing is not there now, so I assume he sold out. I don't know the seller personally so I don't know when or if he will be selling these again. however.... I just wanted to highly recommend this upgrade to anyone with an Amiga 3000 who is experiencing the garbled graphics issue after the computer warms up. I have had this issue for years now and never knew what to do about it. I read on the forum here about the issue being these particular PAL chips. Apparently there is something called a GAL chip which is programmable and runs cooler. Some people (like this ebay seller presumably) have the equipment necessarily to program these GAL chip replacements with the correct instructions to function like the original PAL chips in question and do so cooler.
The seller had detailed instructions including pictures on how to do the swap. I would recommend using a proper chip puller tool as the chips a little frozen in place if they haven't been moved since 1991. I rocked a little pressure back and forth and the chips slid right out with no damage or bending of the pins. I carefully placed the new chips in place (being sure to note the position of the little half moon on the chips) and gently pressed them into place. Fired the computer back up, placed for hours and the graphics are rock solid now! No more problems!
I bought these chip for under 30 dollars. One of the best purchases I have made to date on my Amiga and I would highly recommend it to anyone else with a 3000 and the garbled graphics issue. I would also recommend the ebay seller "cowdog360" if he sells more in the future.
peace.
