Windows 7, Linux, and Mass Effect 1
« on: December 25, 2010, 03:11:41 PM »
Hey guys,

First let's start off with Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Happy Kwanza, and any other holiday around this time of year I don't know about!

I have been having this issue for a while now, and the gaming forums I've tried have offered limited assistance, all of which hasn't worked. I was refferred to this forum to see if it was potentially an OS issue, as the game's developers and distributors offer zero support for Windows 7.

After browsing around, I noticed that Win7 and Linux are touchy subjects around here, but somebody's bound to know something!

I have a digital copy of Mass Effect 1, purchased and downloaded from Steam. The game will run...if I have all year. The game is super slow: The opening BIOWARE splash screen will take 5 minutes to go by, the following EA screen will take the same amount of time. Then I get to the "Press Any Key" screen, and then 20-30 minutes later, I'll get to the Main Menu. An hour after that (These times are only SLIGHT exaggerations, I am merely rounding up), I will be able to load a game. If I take a month, I might be able to exit whatever room my character is in, but I haven't put that to the test yet.

I have tried "run as administrator", running Steam as administrator, reinstalling the game, rolling back to previous graphics drivers...

I used to be able to play this game at one point, but now the game is unplayable (hence why I tried an older graphic's driver), and I can't get a refund on the game (I don't think any PC game is refundable once opened, used, played, etc etc).

So If the good folks here can think of an Operating System angle to this problem, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks!

Jonah
