CDTV + SCSI = Problem... help?
« on: October 29, 2011, 06:50:33 PM »
Ok folks.
I have unnamed (made in 2010) SCSI controller for CDTV.
It comes with a Seagate 50pin drive http://stason.org/TULARC/pc/hard-drives-hdd/seagate/ST51080N-MEDAL-1080-1080MB-3-5-SL-SCSI2-FAST.html
I'm having problems, when copying/extracting files from th CDTV CD to hard disk or even from disk to the same disk.
errors? - "I/O error", "cannot find file", "infinite loop" and many more anomalies. Mainly I've tried to instal ClassicWB, tried many methods, with help from budies from polish amiga board - no success. I'm damn sure that archives are ok. It breaks copy/extract action in the same place.... always.. :furious:
Sometimes, when copying larger amount of files or bigger file suddenly CD is disappearing from the system... after that I need to eject CADY and pack it back inside...  An yes, I've tried WB from 1.3 to 3.1 - no luck.

I was thinking about termination topic....
Is it possible that I don't made coorect?
As far as I know, contoller has it own terminator, diode, and fuse protection. If it comes for the hard drive, it's SCSI-II with own terminator. The jumper on the hard drive is set to take power for the terminator from the CDTV PSU, but i don't know, if the controller has it own power source for the terminator. On hard drive label a label is sticked with the jumper configs, I can choose from options:

" - Terminator power to the drive terminator and the SCSI bus-    install jumpers on pins 21 and 23 and on pins 22 and 24 of J8.    This is the default.  - Terminator power to the drive terminators only-install a    jumper on pins 23 and 24 of J8.  - Terminator power from another device to the bus and the    drive's terminator disabled-install a jumper on pins 21 and    23 of J8.  - Terminator power to the bus only and the drive terminator    disabled-install a jumper on pins 22 and 24 of J8."

But i fear that if I am to choose wrong setting, I can damage device/s

and what about the CDTV CDROM? And termination?

Can anyone assist me to resolve my problem? :(

My CDTV spec:

Original MC68000
1MB Chip ECS + 2MB FAST RAM
controller SCSI + Seagate
Kickstart 3.1
FDD.............
A500+ 2Mb chip + Viper520CD

If it's just the two devices on the bus (controller + drive) at least one of them needs to provide termpower - both won't hurt - and both need to be terminated (resistor packs or termination chips). Any photos from the controlller?

Problems with termpower or termination won't damage anything - but the filesystem. ;)

Danke fur deine interesse! ;)

I've got some pictures but frankly - they are poor quality.

So, can I turn the jumper on the hardrive to provide power for both drive and controller without any electrical/electronic damage? :)(don't know if the controller gets power for the terminator)
One more thing- WB works fine on the disk,  playing black crypt, hired guns (install from a floppy disk)  etc.  also, when copying/extracting from floppy also....

OK I've tried various settings with the terminator power, without success - disk is not powering on or it is but doesn't want to boot. I'm assuming now that the termination settings are just fine.

If I copy the CD to HDD first and the extract archive from HDD to the same HDD= there are problems. When operating FDD+HDD = there are no problems....
