It reminds me to some extent of my own gaffe in that area, when I helpfully provided the inhabitants of rec.pets.cats a literal translation of the Dutch expression
een kopje geven---the gesture a cat makes when it rubs its cheeks against your hand, legs, food bowl, whatever.
