Urban Legends
« on: December 05, 2010, 05:48:36 AM »
Definition of an Urban Legend: An urban legend, urban myth, urban tale, or, more accurately, a  contemporary legend, is a form of modern folklore consisting of  apocryphal stories that those who tell them believe to be true.

I  sort of noticed that a lot of users on Amiga.org are from different  parts of the world so i thought it would be interesting to share Urban  Legends with each other. Lets see who has the scariest stories       :nervous:

OK then,  I'll go first. The following is an urban legend in my hometown of Newcastle, Australia.

The Newcastle Turd Monster.  Legend has it in 1970 a local surfer who was surfing at the time was so  desperate to take a dump but couldn't as that mean't that he would have  to get back onto the beach and walk up to the toilet just so he could  let loose. He figured it was too much effort so he just went in the  water. I suppose it made sense at the time, i mean, who hasn't taken a  leak in a swimming pool? Nice and easy. However it soon became apparent  that it wasn't that easy. It clearly did not go to plan. Instead of  sinking never to be seen again it simply floated away, it then took on a  mind of it's own, never to be seen again apart from the odd sighting.  This moment would later be remembered as the origins of the Newcastle  Turd Monster. To this day it is said to be still floating up and down  the 3 local beachs looking for unsuspecting surfers to prey upon. Some  say he (it?) is a creation of the devil himself while others say it is  nothing more than a really ugly fish. Some claim they have even seen it  fly! I believe there is more than what we know about and we should just  let things be.    :nervous:

This  legend has been my greatest fear for most of my life. I remember my  parents telling me stories about it when i was 5. Been absolutely  terrifed ever since. Everytime i get in the water and go for a surf i'm  always looking around just in case. It scares the crap out of me!     :nervous:

OK  now i'm going lock myself in my closet for the next few hours in terror  for even having the nerve to talk about this. Some things should never  be spoken about this is one of them      :nervous:

I like the films where they play out the urban legends. I imagine 'the ring' started as an urban legend somewhere.

My favourite is the boogeyman who gets naughty kids and kids who stay up after midnight. Read up on the legend of the boogeyman (also known as the sackman), every country seems to have one.

There was an interesting urban legend about a car being stuck in a cliff. Upon investigating they found out that a man had put a solid rocket booster on his car and used it on a stretch of highway, his brakes had melted in a effort to stop before ending up in the cliff. Says the story. However there is no police record of such an incident. Mythbusters even tried it out and were able to keep the car under control.

Yeah i'm pretty sure The Ring was based on an urban legend. In fact if you watch the tv show Supernatural every episode is actually based on a real life urban legend. For example: hookman and bloody mary. That's why i like it so much.      :)

Great stuff guys but i must admit i'm a little disappointed. Amigans have always prided themselves on creativity but going by the resonable lack of Urban Legend contributions on this thread i guess i was wrong....  :(

Has anyone heard about the ghost in the Amiga....
