The orginal R stood for "Replacement" and I seem to remember (so it's probably wrong) that AI had taken issue with "Replacement."  Replacement, Research, Amiga, it's all just words to a title, what is important is the code and who owns it.

Are all references to Amiga, Workbench, AmigaOS, etc. going to be dropped from aros.org?

IIRC, Wayne has a written license to use the above on this site from AI.  Wayne?

Since Amiga Inc has done nothing to defend its trademark in the past, it has effectively abandoned it.

Oh, but it has.  Remember when Gary Peak when on a rampage about sites (like AO) required to have a (free) license for using any AI's IP?  That will qualify nicely for defending their trademark.  If you want to spend the cash on a team of lawyers attempting to remove AI's trademark(s), go for it.

Speaking of AI and Lawyers, latest chapter can be read here.

Glad AROS is steering clear of that mess.

A one time thing isn't good enough. Defending one's trademark has to be done continuously.

AFAIK, AI has been active in taking down sites and auctions down that infringed on their IP for awhile.  So what actions AI has taken, we really don't know how often.  I suspect it's enough for the courts, if it was ever challenged.

Not to mention the fact that they have, as far as I know, never taken any action with regards to AROS, even though they have had complete knowledge of it's existence since the beginning.

That is because they couldn't touch AROS.  They made some "request" some time ago, which AROS complied with. The only remotely questionable use of anything AI related was AROS' name which now has been changed. AROS does not use AI's trademarks nor any AI's IP, including any code.
