Dead Progressive 2000-040
« on: October 04, 2010, 08:10:59 PM »
Hi guys, about 1 month ago I bought an A2000HD (not working) without HD (it had a broken external syquest sq5110) and a Progressive 2000-040.

Finally, the machine worked (and I installed a old scsi drive on the a2091, so now it's working almost as original), but can't revive the 2000-040.

The first thing I did was playing with jumpers, maybe it was mis-configured, but nothing.
The only way to boot the machine, was settings everything to disabled. Then from workbench, the driver software don't 'see' the card or the memory on it.
Next step was removing the memory SIMMs, but again, no boot, except disabling everything and booting with the 68000.

Black screens is all what I got.

Looking at the card, I found that there is a missing leg on a chip. Maybe this is the problem? Or it is a 'workaround' for some known problem?

Can somebody help me with this?

I'm attaching a photo of the card.

Thank you!

PS: Sorry for my english!

Hi Odin, thank you for your reply.

The wires are for the fan.

Looking on the net, seems that different revisions had solved this, but it looks like it's a design fault (I have rev.C, maybe they didn't knew abt the heat produced by the 68040 in design stage, and had to add a fan after production??)

Here's one like mine:

This other has wiring solved:

Alright! Thank you guys, seems that the missing leg it's a 'normal' issue, as the wiring for the fan.. so I'll try the soft boot.. will tell you the results later!!

Again, thank you very much!

PS: In the other post, they name the HD being the problem but nope, I tried to boot without the a2091 scsi card, and nothing.. let's see!

Ok guys, bad news.

Nothing happens.. tried the following:

Booting without memory, with 68040 ON: Black screen
Booting without memory, with 68040 OFF: Works normal, but PPS software doesn't 'see' the card (get the 'You need a progressive card' message)
Booting with memory (8mb), with 68040 OFF: Black, then Gray, then Yellow screen with Power led blinking 10 times, and reboots again to black, gray and yellow. Can't reboot by keyboard.

After a while watching the color cycling on the screen, I got a 'SOFTWARE ERROR - CLICK LEFT BUTTON' and then a (not very informative?) screen.

I'm attaching it.

Btw, I checked and double checked jumper settings, it's ok.

Thanks!

So, no luck.

Something is really wrong with this card, cpu and the memory aren't working..

I'm thinking that there may be a problem with the motherboard.

The guy who sold the machine to me, told me that it was working fine the last time he used it, 15 years ago..

So what do you think? Maybe some capacitor blown? I have no idea about electronics, what else can I check?

yeah, the battery leaked, but it seems that nothing is damaged (at least at first sight)

Is there something else I can try? I don't have another A2000 to test the card..

Yeah, the guy who sold me the A2000 cleaned it..

So, looking with proper light, I can see that the two broader tracks near the battery were affected by the acid, but the tester shows that they are still working.

The battery has some salt on the negative pole, so I guess it's still leaking acid and I must remove it, right? How do I do that? Is it safe to use a solder to unsolder it?

What can I use to clean the remaining acid on the board?

Will the A2000 still work without the battery? Maybe I can replace it with a coin battery.. and btw, it's surprising that after more than 15 years, the battery shows 3,78v.

The arrows on the first photo shows the spots I used to test the damaged track.
