I am a complete novice to the world of Amiga and vintage gaming in  general as I grew up in the age of retro with the Super Nintendo etc.

I recently picked up an Amiga 500 with a ton of original and blank floppy discs for around £20.

Upon testing it I found that what I would consider the main components  work fine. Everything powers up ok and the picture via the RF output box  is perfect etc.

When attempting to load discs I stumbled across 2 major problems.  Firstly, discs will not fully load due to an error message that pops up  saying that the "RAM DISK IS FULL" and secondly neither of the Joystick  ports seem to be working meaning I have no control when it gets to this  point meaning I just have to switch it off and on again to get back to  the main screen.

If someone could offer some repair advice that is jargon free it would  more than appreciated. I am not squeamish about taking it apart or  soldering etc, I just wouldn't know where to start.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to any replies.

Mike.

Thanks for the reply. To answer, I have no RAM expansion to speak of, I thought it may be built in. Also, I am not attempting to copy the game to the RAM, that is what the Amiga automatically tells me when I insert a disk.

The specs of the machines I don't know and I don't know how to access this information. I have realised it is an A500 though if that is any help?

I have tried using a mouse, and 2 different joysticks. The buttons work, but I don't seem to be able to move the cursor with any peripheral.

I also don't know how to access the work bench via the keyboard. I tried to browse with tab etc but no joy. When I switch the machine on a picture of a disk shows and that's it. I assumed to just insert a disk and that be it if I am honest. Probably naive, but this is literally the first time I have ever tried to set one up myself.

Thank you, I will look for the disk now and post my findings. It's funny how the more advance and technical technology has gotten, the simpler it is to troubleshoot. I could take a PC or xbox 360 etc apart and fix it, but this boggles me, lol.

Thanks again.

Ok, I have got workbench running, but this doesn't seem to help anything, I have played with the mouse settings and still cannot get it work properly. I am having to navigate using the Amiga plus direction keys and select files using the mouse buttons.

What will I need to do/have to get this back to working order. I don't mind spending a little money and as fore mentioned performing internal repairs etc. I'd just like to get it in to a good usable order.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank you, I will do this asap. It is definitely an A500, not an A500+. I have some other consoles to check in the mean time. As this seems like it will take the most attention I'll save it till last so I am not rushing and can be more thorough. I haven't had it open yet, but I have noticed the unit has been opened already as there seems to be a broken warranty seal covering a screw hole and the screw is missing.

Anyway, Thank you all for being so helpful this far and I will keep posting my progress.

Mike.
