I hate that too, it's so rude and it makes you feel like such a tool as well. :-(

Although I suppose I don't look exactly "respectable," it really offends me when people don't smile back. Particularly older people for some reason. I hope to God I'm not that miserable when I'm older (although it seems like they're doing their best to make that happen.)

I once offered to help an old lady struggling with some heavy shopping. She immediately assumed I wanted to mug her. I politely explained that I had no interest in doing so, but she genuinely didn't want to trust me and so struggled on.

I was left feeling a bit stupid, but it annoyed me later when I thought over it.

Now I'm not saying anything bad about her, but it's a sorry state when that's the conclusion people jump to.

 Imagine it...

Old lady "Please! take my purse it's not much but please..."

Karlos "No, honeslty, I don't want it. I just thought you might want a hand with those heavy bags..."

"No! Please, take it! I have Grandchildren..."

"But.."

"Go on!"

A scene ensues ...

"Bloody hell, anything for a quiet life! I can send it back to you insured delivery if you like...what's your address?"

"No! Don't break into my house...."

etc...
