Octamed Soundstudio can be configured as a slave midi instrument. It's certianly capable of polyphonic playback of samples (especially in mix mode), but I'm not totally sure about multitimbral in the fullest sense (keyboard splits etc.) but you can have many sounds loaded and switch between them.
