Sounds like revisionist history combined with kernel/entire OS conflation to me. Unix is a complete OS.
Torvalds wrote a kernel, initially as an experiment, which was subsequently used for GNU since the intended kernel for the latter was not (and in truth still is not) ready.
GNU is the "rip off" of Unix that you are thinking of, not Torvald's work. And kudos Stallman and co for doing it; without their work, computing would be far more closed, restrictive and expensive than it is.
