There are schematics for building your own MIDI interface on aminet. The parts alone shouldn't cost you more than a few dollars as all it really consists of is some optical isolation.

http://aminet.net/package/docs/hard/MIDI-2.0 looks like a good place to start...

I forget what it was called now, but there was also a utility to read the pots on your proportional joystick and have them generate MIDI controller messages of your choosing.

Kinda like the old vector synths from back in the day.
