How does it behave in the following configurations?

1) Compositing disabled
2) Compositing enabled, optimise for memory usage
3) Compositing enabled, optimise for speed

Well, without compositing, you are back to old style layers and clipping instead. Working out which bits to redraw and clipping as appropriate introduces some overhead.
