Simple. In the end, nothing beats real hardware. Softsynths are a convenience and probably a lot more use in a studio, but there's nothing quite like a real keyboard infront of you with buttons, knobs and stuff. It's the user experience, more than anything.

I can remember lusting after the Alesis Quadrasynth back in the day. Not only did it sound awesome at the time, I thought it looked simply gorgeous.

Still, as a perpetually skint sudent back in 1995, the thing was stratospherically out of my price range.
